The 78 Squadron Whitley had left RAF Middleton-St. George at 20.37 hrs on 6 September, 1941, for an operation to Hüls in Germany. The aircraft was intercepted and shot down by a nightfighter and crashed at 01.25 hrs on 7 September near Burgum. The crew, P/O Francis Bernard Thorpe, Sgt Cyril Vincent Matheson (22), Sgt David Victor Logan, RAAF (28), Sgt Geoffrey Carman, RNZAF (31) and Sgt Charles James Storer, are buried here in the Nederlands Hervormde Begraafplaats.
On the way home, the Whitley was intercepted and shot down by Bf 110 'G9+FM', a night fighter aircraft from Leeuwarden, flown by Oberleutnant Helmut Lent of 4./NJG 1.
