Detailed for a 'Gardening' mission in the Nectarine area of the Frisian Islands, the Wellington B.X of 196 Squadron took off at 19.22 hrs on 23 March, 1943, from RAF Leconfield. The Wellington crashed and exploded on impact off Terschelling. Only one crewmember survived. Sgt. E. W. Booth managed to swim ashore, despite of his wounds. He was taken prisoner. His fellow crewmembers perished. Sgt Basil John France Crook (21), pilot Sgt Henry Cavell Duckmanton, RNZAF (24), Sgt Samuel Robert Outra Hermon (28) and Sgt Douglas Robert Jeffrey (30) were buried here on Terschelling.

Whitley BD379 of 24 OTU, RAF Honeybourne, took of at 22.20 hrs on 25 June, 1942, for an operation against Bremen. At 04.11 hrs, an SOS from BD379 was received and it was presumed the aircraft crashed soon into the sea after this message. The entire crew perished in the crash. P/O Ian Patterson Clark (27), Sgt Harold Hermon Hudson, F/O James Brian Monro, RNZAF (21) and F/S John Storey were buried in the Algemene Begraafplaats at West Terschelling.
F/O Gordon Richard Lind, RAAF (23) has no known grave and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

This Wellington of 429 'Bison' Squadron, RCAF, had left RAF East Moor at 16.56 hrs in de afternoon of 21 January, 1943, for a 'Gardening' operation in the Terschelling area of the Frisian Islands. The Wellington was carrying two 1.500lb Assembly B200 and A108 'Vegetables' as well as 900 ronds of .303 ammunition. The aircraft was shot down by Flak and crashed at 18.36 hrs into the Waddenzee off Roptazijl. Sgt Charles Risingham (22) rests in Pietersbierum, while Sgt Ian Nicoll Stirton is buried in Usquert General Cemetery (Province of Groningen). Only the pilot, F/O Ian Sinclair Johnson, RNZAF (aged 30), was buried here at West-Terschelling.
The pilot of another 429 Squadron aircraft, Sgt Hannau in BK499, reported being attacked by a Flak-ship on approaching the target. This aircraft failed to locate the target on a second attempt and brought back home its 'Vegetables'. Only the third Wellington (BK162) reported a succesful planting of the 'Vegetables'.

This aircraft failed to locate the target on a second attempt and brought back home its 'Vegetables'. Only the third Wellington (BK162) reported a succesful planting of the 'Vegetables'.

After take off from RAF Woolfox Lodge at 19.10 hrs on 16 February, 1942, Manchester L7433 of 61 Squadron RAF, set course for the Dutch coastal area on a 'Gardening' sortie. The aircraft was hit by Flak and crashed into the sea off Terschelling. There were no survivors. In the summer of 1942, the bodies of the second pilot and both air gunners washed ashore on Terschelling. Sgt Frederick Stanley Partridge, RNZAF (28), Sgt Arthur George Edward Pearce (20) and Sgt Frederick George Rackstraw (19) were buried in the Algemene Begraafplaats here at West Terschelling.
