Fallen in the Battle for Freedom and Justice
The principal aim of this website is to remember and honour the airmen of the Royal New Zealand Air Force who lost their lives in the aerial battles of the Second World War and who found their last resting place in our country, the Province of Fryslân.
In all 38 airmen of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, are buried in 9 different cemeteries throughout our province, including the Frisian Islands of Terschelling, Ameland and Schiermonnikoog*.
It must also be noted, that the remains of a number of airmen originally laid to rest in our province have been removed for reburial since. Some RNZAF airmen were reburied at the Jonkerbos Cemetery near Nijmegen in the Province of Gelderland and the Bergen-op-Zoom War Cemetery in Brabant or have returned to their native country.
Our aim is to expand this website to include all Commonwealth and Allied Air Forces War Graves in Fryslân, detailing all the graves of the airmen in our province as well as the graves of the airmen, who have lost their life over Frisian soil, but were buried elsewhere.
An attempt has been made to include all memorials in our province commemorating those who gave their life in the air battles over Fryslân during the Second World War.
For the last 4 years we have spent visiting and photographing all the graveyards and monuments in the province as well as well as gathering all the information. The work hasn't finished yet and will continue.

* The island of Texel is, although part of the Frisian chain of islands, officially not a part of the Province of Fryslân, and is therefore not included in this part of the website. Our aim is to visit all RNZAF war graves in the Netherlands in the years to come. Please visit our Royal New Zealand Air Force Wargraves in the Netherlands.
